We are pleased to announce the scheduling of our third Academy of Realist Art workshop in Richmond, Virginia. The October workshop, "In the Studio of Sargent", was a tremendous success, and popular instructor Matthew Mancini will be returning this spring.

This new five-day workshop focuses on creating a painted portrait using a photo reference (subject to instructor approval). Participants learn the key principles of what information to keep and what to omit, as well as concepts of form, value, shape, and finishing processes. Students of all levels are welcome, however, beginners will use a limited palette while more advanced students will use a broader palette. A handout will be provided prior to the start of the workshop to outline photo requirements.

Fall Richmond Oil Painting Workshop:
In the Studio of Sargent

Instructed by:
Matthew Mancini
Academy of Realist Art

October 26-30, 2009
Richmond, Virginia
Tuition: $600

This workshop will explore the direct painting techniques of this 19th century painter. While copying a chosen portrait of his, the student will learn a systematic approach to painting the portrait in his manner, exploring brush techniques, paint application and a flesh tone palette made simple. The workshop is great for the Sargent enthusiast, and for those who wish to pursue portrait painting in a direct and efficient manner.

This new workshop is designed to give artists an opportunity to delve into paint and brush handling for achieving a representational, realistic portrait in a more immediate way. It will also help participants develop a good "vocabulary" for sketching from life. Painters who already use alla prima methods in genres such as landscape, but who now wish to explore the possibilities with portraiture will also benefit from this workshop.

Aaron Pavelis

Many artists struggle a lifetime to come close to the level of skill achieved by the young Richmond painter Aaron Pavelis. If talent is truly the love of a thing, then that's what is most evident in Pavelis' work. His palette is subtly beautiful, and controlled but not overly polished brushwork gently models the forms in his exquisite portraits. See more of Aaron Pavelis' work here.

"How you should endeavor to copy and draw after as few masters as possible"

This is from Artists on Art from the XIV to the XX Century.

"When you have practiced drawing for a while as I have told you above, that is, on small panels, take pains and pleasure in constantly copying the best works that you can find done by the hand of great masters . . . And as you go on from day to day, it will be unnatural if you fail to pick up something of his style and of his mien. For if you set out to copy after one master today and after another one tomorrow, you will not acquire the style of either one or the other, and you will inevitably become fantastic, because each style will fatigue your mind . . . If you imitate the forms of a single artist through constant practice, your intelligence would have to be crude indeed for you not to get some nourishment from them. Then you will find, if nature has granted you any imagination at all, that you will eventually acquire a style individual to yourself, and it cannot help being good; because your hand and your mind, being always accustomed to gathering flowers, would ill know how to pluck thorns." --Cennino Cennini, CA 1372 - ?

Cennini wrote Il Libro Dell'arte - The Craftsman's Handbook - the definitive source of information about the technique of medieval artists. It contains an early description of egg tempera painting.

Preparing a Wooden Palette

Besides portability, an advantage to using a wooden palette is the medium color value of its surface. Artist William Whitaker describes how to prepare a wooden palette here. You can purchase one of his custom-designed mahogany pallets from Real Gesso.

Update: Academy of Realist Art Old Master Copy Oil Painting Workshop

May 4-15, 2009
(2 Weeks, Monday - Friday)
Hours: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Location: 2111 Spencer Road, Richmond, Virginia
Instructor: Cindy MacMillan, Academy of Realist Art
Tuition: $975

Study an “old master” painting in one of the cities that helped shape America as we know it today. This former capital of the confederacy is full of history complemented with a thriving modern culture, it’s interesting, fun and easy to love.

Utilizing a copy of an old master painting you will learn the step-by-step academic process that leads to an exact copy. You will gain a clear understanding of the traditional materials, techniques and principles of oil painting. You will learn the important concepts of massing of tonal values, planning light and dark values (chiaroscuro), selective focus and the technique of layering. Used together these make a luminous painting. Some modern materials will be used to help speed up the process, so you can fit your project within the time limits of the workshop.

The workshop coordinator is available for consultation regarding travel arrangements and directions, Mary Barbour mlbarbour@gmail.com (804) 869-0374.

Registration for the Old-Master Copy Workshop will be handled directly through the Academy of Realist Art.
